Chrissie comes from a background of similar projects, and has most recently been Museum Director at The Loughborough Bell Foundry Trust, and will bring lots of experience and energy to the role.

We have an exciting FREE Family Fun Day planned for the 25th August between 12:30 and 14:30 at St Mary’s. Storyteller, Nicky Rafferty will host a storytelling session for children of all ages. It will be an informal session with accompanying crafts. We hope to see lots of faces old and new there.

The battle took place in 1487, and was the last major battle of the War of the Roses. After the battle Henry VII was said to have taken mass at St Mary’s, and his coat of arms is depicted in the surviving medieval window in the Eastern end of the Church.

The terrain varies from road to track to field margin so please wear appropriate footwear, and dress appropriately for the weather.

Project Update 27.02.2024

Under the Reawakening banner, we have three separate projects. First, Urgent Works representing repairs and replacements to the north roof including high level masonry repairs and rainwater goods, all jointly sponsored by Historic England and the Nation Lottery Heritage Fund. Secondly, internal reordering including a new accoustically-separate Thomas Magnus Room in the north west corner and a new cafe and loos in the south west. Additionally, the nave platform will be extended to create a more flexible space. This work is sponsored by the Church of England’s Strategic Development Fund. Finally the main Reawakening project will include a new south roof, solar panels, air-source heat pump, new heating, lighting to the west of the rood screen, updated security, and improved means of accessibility via the west and south doors. The total cost of the works will be in the order of £4.5m and we are extremely grateful to all our sponsors and contributors.

We are now fully funded with the exception of about £63k which has been underwritten by three individuals. However, we are very confident of raising this sum from remaining applications to trusts and charities.

We now have planning consent for the roof works and the solar panels. The diocese has also given conditional consent under the faculty system and our design team will be submitting detailed plans and specifications in due course.  We continue to be in close touch with the diocesan authorities.

We have recently held initial meetings with both the National Lottery Heritage Fund and Historic England and I’m glad to report that both were entirely satisfactory. We are currently awaiting formal ‘Permission to Start’ from the Lottery and expect this to be available very shortly. All three projects will be undertaken contemporaneously with the work hopefully starting in or around September this year.

Unfortunately, the funds from the Lottery Fund are paid in arrear and this means we have had to negotiate a significant cashflow loan from the Diocese, for which we are sincerely grateful.

I am glad to confirm that the PCC is kept fully informed and all members receive a copy of the monthly Project Board minutes. Final approval of design details also rests with the PCC.

In addition to the building works, we are starting to implement our ambitious Activity Plan which you can read below.
This is a really important aspect of the project and you are urged to be aware of what is proposed.

Finally, we are entering the annual Newark Business Awards (for the first time!) in two categories, namely Best Social Enterprise and Environmental Champion. We will let you know if we reach the finals!

Please feel free to be in touch if you have any queries.

Lottery News: 11.01.2024

The Reawakening of St Mary Magdalene; Supporting Newark’s Communities project has been awarded a £2.5 million grant by The National Lottery Heritage Fund to enable delivery of the project during the later part of 2024 through to 2026.

Today, the Parochial Church Council of St Mary Magdalene with St Leonard, Newark, has received a National Lottery Heritage Fund grant of £2.5 million for an exciting heritage project, Reawakening of St Mary Magdalene: Supporting Newark’s Communities, in Newark. Made possible by money raised by National Lottery players, the project focuses on major roof repairs and other refurbishment of the Grade 1 Listed building together with the delivery of an exciting 3 year Activity Plan.

Supported by The National Lottery Heritage Fund, the project will ‘Reawaken’ St Mary’s so that it becomes a hub in the town and by developing a programme of heritage, educational and volunteering activities and improving physical access will ensure that everyone has a warm welcome. Repairs, upgrades and new environmental sustainability measures will make the church safe and water-tight, reinstating it as a key heritage asset in the town and securing it for many generations to come. It will also support the people of Newark and Sherwood District and beyond, including young people with their heritage and construction careers, allowing them opportunities to learn about and develop heritage skills.

St Mary Magdalene is a 12th Century church which has been witness to Newark’s remarkable history and is celebrated as one of the finest parish churches in the country and is of national and international importance. The repairs will ensure that it is available for generations to come.

Project-Lead and Churchwarden, Andrew Fearn, said that he and his colleagues are enormously excited by the grant which will enable the project to proceed. “Thanks to the generosity of National Lottery players, we have the opportunity to secure this wonderful building for future generations. Our Activity Plan is ambitious and imaginative, and I am thrilled that it will enable us to support the town’s communities, visitors, and tourists alike.”
