We’d love you to be part of the family here at St Mary Magdalene with St Leonard. One of the key ways to do this is to bring your contribution.
We have so many different serving terms you can get involved with – whether you’re an expert in something, or have never done it before, we’d love you to join us serving the church and our town.
Vacancies on Staff team can be found here. Some of our volunteer teams are listed below. We hope you can find a place to serve and get stuck in!
Community Cafe team
Meeting every Monday afternoon (apart from bank holidays and August) our community cafe serves those in the community who find themselves in need of a chat.If you have a compassionate heart and a willingness to serve drinks or offer a listening ear, you would be most welcome to join this ministry area.
Coffee Bar Barista team
Our coffee bar is often the first point of contact for visitors and so a welcoming smile and friendly nature are key. No experience necessary, as all training given. We currently open 10am-3pm Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays.
Sunday Home Team
Our Home Team includes our Welcome Team, Hospitality Team and Set up+Pack down Team.
If you have a heart for welcoming people to the church family; or a heart for hospitality and connecting others; or feel happy to practically give a little of your time to move chairs, do some hoovering or baking, then this team is for you. We work on a rota basis, meaning each person serves just once a month.
Choir
We run an all-age mixed sex choir. Children and young people who sing in the choir get significant financial support towards their music learning. Children (choristers) meet on a Wednesday and a Friday for rehearsal, while teenagers (Magnus Scholars) and adults meet on a Friday evening. The choir sings for the Sunday 9.15am and 5.00pm services, taking in a huge amount of varied and exciting music. They are supported by our Director of Music (Stephen Bullamore) and Assistant Organist (Elizabeth Harwood). There are frequent trips to sing in other places, most recently to Germany. Previous experience (for adults) is helpful, but if you are able to commit then you will be given lots of support to thrive.
Choir Chaperones
Our chaperone team help to supervise our choristers, mainly in their Wednesday and Friday rehearsals. As well as their safeguarding role, they often offer pastoral support. You don’t need to be a musician to do this, but you will gain a fascinating insight into how we prepare for our choral services.
To join the team, we look for 2 references and a DBS check; you may be asked to undertake some basic safeguarding training.
Flower team
Do you have a passion for flowers and creating great church displays? We gather each Thursday morning to make both simple and elaborate displays. We also arrange flowers for funerals and weddings when requested. No matter your ability you are most welcome.
Toddle Together team
Our vision for Toddle Together is to create a safe, welcoming and fun space for families of under 5s. We want to help them to build genuine friendship and community that extends far beyond a Monday morning, and for the kids to find joy and laughter through play, songs and story time. If you’re passionate about welcoming families, building community and creating a fun and safe atmosphere, Toddle Together would love to hear from you. This ministry is run in partnership with Assemble Church.
KIDS team
This incorporates Sundays KIDS groups and Beacon after school church
On Sundays, we aim to provide the best hour of every child’s week and are looking for volunteers with a heart to see children encounter Jesus! These groups are for children from birth to 11 years old at both the 9.15am and 11.00am services at both St Mary Magdalene and St Leonard .
To join the team, we look for 2 references and a DBS check.
Beacon after school church meets at Charles Street Methodist Church monthly on Thursdays.
Youth team

Note 2 x references will be requested, DBS + full safeguarding training will be provided as part of the process.
Eco Church team

Sound, Visuals and Media team
If you have an interest in music + worship and would like to run sound or projection on a Sunday get in touch! We are keen to train people up who would like to serve in this area. We’d also love to hear from creatives who are passionate about photo/videography, design + production!

We’re passionate about leading people in authentic, whole-hearted worship and encounter with Jesus. If you play an instrument or sing and share this passion, we’d love to hear from you.
Stewarding team
Stewards have a very special role welcoming visitors to our church building. If you are happy being public facing and answering visitors questions (with the help of our historic guide book!) then this role is for you.
Roles within services
If you are comfortable being in front of others and you think you would like to play a part within a worship service as either an intercessors, reader or server, this could be for you!
